Let's bring courageous common sense back to the classroom and restore the focus where it belongs—the success of the next generation!

Heather is running to ensure that AISD’s primary focus remains on educating our children to the highest possible level with an emphasis on core subjects such as reading, math, and science. She will be a champion for parents and guardians and their rights in their child’s education. Heather will leave politics at the door and work to be a trustee for all of AISD.
Heather Toolin believes her job as your next AISD Board Trustee is simple:
Trusted, Bold Leadership.
Leading on the Important Issues.
ENSURING THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF AISD REMAINS EDUCATION
I will work to create a culture in which our teachers are empowered and supported to make teaching their primary focus. Our goal across the entire district should be to create engaging classrooms who bring out the best in each and every student.
LEAVING POLITICS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS
As a mother of two AISD students, I want my children to receive the best possible education without bringing the adult political issues of our day into their classrooms. I know our schools can inspire and nurture the civic character of the young minds of our students without introducing them to the divisive nature of our current political landscape.
CREATING A COMMUNITY-LED PROCESS FOR REVIEWING BOOKS/MATERIALS
Whether it is a required classroom reading, on a summer reading list, or simply something on a district library shelf, AISD must have a fair, neutral process for flagging and reviewing materials and books that may be not be grade-level appropriate. And while no one person should ever be the sole arbiter of what is “appropriate,” I will be a strong advocate for concerned parents and guardians on this issue and ensure that we have a policy that involves community voices. We can find the balance between academic rigor and grade-level suitability if we work hand-in-hand with our educators and community.
CHAMPIONING PARENTS AND GUARDIANS IN EDUCATION
I wholeheartedly believe parents and guardians are the primary educators in a child’s life. As your next Board Trustee, I will be an ally to parents and guardians of all backgrounds who need an advocate for their children. With about 75,000 students enrolled at AISD, I know it is hard to have your voice heard. To parents and guardians, I say, my door is open, and you will have my respect always.
SUPPORTING OUR BEST TEACHERS
Teaching is hard enough. When you factor in all of the other mandates and requirements we place on teachers, it can feel downright impossible. I will work to create a culture and environment at AISD where our teachers are unleashed to focus on their passion: teaching their subject matter at the highest level. I will also work to eliminate any distraction from teachers teaching and will always have an open mind to the needs our teachers articulate to the Board.
